Nowhere else will you find a coal-stoked brick. The amazing brick factory where real coal-stoked brick is produced can be found in Deest: meet Vogelensangh!

A coal-powered ring kiln

In the ring kiln, the fire turns a complete revolution in the space of 10 days, firing the bricks at a temperature of around 1060 degrees Celsius. That temperature is reached because the stokers throw coals through into the kiln day and night through the stoke holes.

The correct temperature in the ring kiln is essential for achieving a high-quality end product. After 10 days of stoking, the end product can be seen: traditional, coal-stoked brick.

The stokers throw coals into the kiln through the stoke holes day and night.

A typical coal-stoked brick

Once the bricks have cooled, they are removed from the kiln. Vogelensangh doesn’t use any colouring agents: the fire gives the coal-stoked brick its unique colour.

The sorter then sorts the bricks by hand depending on colour and makes a unique selection of bricks for each project. From warm-red to yellow or bluey: we can make any colour selection you require.

Different varieties of coal-stoked brick:

Traditional or sintered brick

Coal-stoked brick doesn’t just have one fixed look. A plain colour is achieved through an even distribution of heat and the correct temperature. A special variety of brick is the sintered brick. This variety is also a coal-stoked brick.

To make a sintered brick, the temperature in the kiln is increased to around 1125 degrees Celsius. The coal stokers ensure that the temperature in the ring kiln is at the correct level at all times. By almost melting the brick, the sintered brick gets its aged look.
